Abstract
1421669 Preparation of steels CREUSOTLOIRE 15 Nov 1973 [28 Nov 1972] 53141/73 Heading C7D In the production of metals or alloys, e.g. mild steel, stainless steel, in an electric furnace, O 2 or an 02-rich gas surrounded by a protective agent, e.g. fuel oil, is blown below the surface of the charge during an oxidation stage by a consumable tuyere in the hearth or wall of the furnace. The oxidizing gas and protective agent are replaced by a neutral or reducing gas, e.g. Ar, N 2 , during subsequent reduction, desulphurization or deoxidation. In addition air may be supplied through both conduits of the tuyere, before the oxidation stage, to activate smelting. During the reducing phase pulverulent CaO, Si or C is contained in the gas, and during oxidation, the O 2 or 02-rich gas contains a diluent, e.g. water vapour, neutral gas or atomized water. In the Example, mild steel is produced from steel scrap and anthracite. The preparation of stainless steel from Cr steel scrap and ferro alloys is also referred to.
