Abstract
719,047. Granulating metals; alloys. BERK & CO., Ltd., F. W. Jan. 27, 1953, No. 2351/53. Classes 82 (1) and 82 (2)] A process for the manufacture of metal powders substantially free from oxygen comprises subjecting a downwardly flowing stream of molten metal to the action of an annular and conical jet of aqueous liquid, the velocity of which is at least 60 ft. per sec., in an atmosphere of an inert or reducing gas which is under a sufficient pressure to balance the tendency of the jet to suck air into the system. The metal may be ferrous including alloys of Fe with Cr, Si, A1 and Ti, Cu and Cu-base alloys such as Cu-Pb, Pb, Sn, Al and Al-Mg alloys, Zn, brasses, bronzes, Cr, Ni and alloys thereof. The liquid may be water which may have dissolved in it up to 1 per cent. by weight of oxidation inhibitors such as sodium benzoate, sodium bichromate, sodium arsenite or ammonium chloride. The gas may be N 1 H 1 cracked NH, or argon. The pressure may be less than 60 inches of water above atmospheric pressure. In the form shown, molten metal 2 in a tundish 3 with a central hole 4 is heated by an electric heater 5, and water is jetted by nozzles 7 into a gas-tight chamber 10 having an inlet 11 for non-oxidizing gas, a water inlet 12, pressure gauges 13 and 18, an oxygen indicator 14, an overflow pipe 15, an outlet pipe 16 and a balancing pipe 17. A small excess pressure of not more than one inch of water may be obtained by filling the chamber 10 with water, allowing some of it to flow out and be replaced by a non-oxidizing gas, and then admitting more water to compress slightly the non- oxidizing gas. The Specification describes the treatment of four alloys with the following percentage compositions:-(i) stainless steel containing 17-12 Cr, 9.32 Ni, .21 Si and 68.1 Fe; (ii) a Cr-Ni alloy containing 74.23 Ni, 21.18 Cr, 2.44 Ti, .63 Al and .45 Fe; (iii) a Ni-Cu alloy containing 67.0 Ni, 30.0 Cu, 1.4 Fe and 1.0 Mn; and (iv) a Cu Pb alloy containing 70.05 Cu, 29.31 Pb, .09 Sn and .09 P. Specification 553,672 is referred to.
