Abstract
1424419 Casting composite articles; making cylinders NL INDUSTRIES Inc 12 April 1973 [27 Nov 1972] 17674/73 Headings B3F and B3A A method of producing a casting having a hard wear resistant coating on an inner surface thereof comprises forming the said coating on a core, applying to the said coating a thicker layer of metal, locating the core in a mould, injecting molten metal, e.g. aluminium into the mould and, after solidification of the metal, separating the core from the said coating. Both the coating and the metal layer may be applied to the core by spraying, the product having a rough and pitted exposed surface to assist the adhesion of the cast metal thereto. The coating may comprise zirconia, alumina, tungsten carbide, silicon carbide, boron carbide, titanium carbide, chromium carbide or a boride. The metal layer is preferably steel or a chromium-iron alloy. A release agent such as talc or sodium bicarbonate may be applied to the core prior to spraying on the said coating. Alternatively a layer of Fe, Al, Zn or Sn may be deposited on the core prior to spraying on the coating, this layer subsequently being removed from the surface of the cast article by machining. The core may be removed from the cast article by differential expansion and the method used to produce trochoid housings or cylinders for internal combustion engines.
