Abstract

1289678 Casting a composite strip GLACIER METAL CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [1 April 1970] 15431/70 Heading B3F A strip of bearing material comprises a backing, e.g. of steel, bonded to a lining of an alloy consisting of denser and less dense components, e.g. lead and aluminium, the relative proportions of the components changing progressively through the thickness of the lining and the bonding surface being that where the concentration of the denser component is least. It is made by continuously casting the alloy on to the underside of the steel backing 5. The alloy is fed to a mould 4 from an induction heated furnace 1 where it becomes bonded to the moving steel strip 5. The metal in the mould may be cooled by direct cooling of the upper surface of the steel backing 5 or by indirect cooling of the mould. Further cooling of the composite strip is by means of copper drums 10 having cooling passages therein. The steel backing may be coated with Ni, Co or Zn before the lining is cast on.
