Abstract

1327682 Casting composite articles SHOWA DENKO KK 19 April 1971 [25 Dec 19701 27065/71 Heading B3F [Also in Division B6] An article having a pitted surface is produced by casting the article in aluminium or an alloy thereof using a melt containing particulate lead dichloride or particulate magnesium silicate, polishing a surface of the article to expose some of the particles of lead dichloride or magnesium silicide and treating the polished surface with water at 60-80‹ C. or with an inorganic acid to dissolve out the exposed particles. The alloy may comprise silicon, magnesium, copper, manganese and iron. The acid may be nitric, chromic, sulphuric, hydrochloric or phosphoric acid. The acid may contain a metal salt which is deposited on the metal surface of the article during removal of the particles. Suitable metal salts are those of Fe, Zn, Mn, Mo, Ti, Ni, Pb or Sn. Salts of boron may also be used. The article may be an engine cylinder or its liner. In addition to polishing the surface may be provided with grooves. The pitted and grooved surface retains oil and reduces surface wear.
