Abstract

1356782 Casting a composite strip VANDERVELL PRODUCTS Ltd 8 June 1971 27636/70 Heading B3F [Also in Division C7] A backing strip is moved along a linear path inclined at an angle of at least 10 degrees to the horizontal and whilst on said path is coated on an upper face with a molten alloy, the strip being cooled by application thereto of a coolant so that said alloy solidifies; the alloy must be one which when molten has different phases of different specific gravity up to a certain tempera- and is homogeneous above that temperature. As shown, steel strip 14, which may have an Al-6Si bonding layer thereon, is fed from 15 and 16 via preheater 18 to casting die 10 (cooled by coolant passages 12) where an Al-Pb alloy is fed to the strip, liquid coolant being supplied from 20 and collected at 22. Excess coating is removed by machine tool cutter 23, the strip is optionally heated at 24, and passes through nip-rolls 25 to storage. The coating-alloy may contain 10% Pb, up to 5% total Sn, B, Sb, Ti, Cu, Ni, Mn or Si, and balance Al.
