Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture molds which are excellent in the dimension accuracy and which melt in water or in humid atmospheres, by using a mixture of urea, Na compound, and polyvinyl alcohol as the material for making soluble patterns to be used for making precision casting molds.
CONSTITUTION: A model is produced by mixing 70W80% urea, 10W20% Na compound, such as NaNO3, etc., and powder of polyvinyl alcohol, by pouring the mixture into a metallic mold after the mixture is heated and melted, and then, by taking out the solidified material from the metallic mold. A refractory muddy material is produced by mixing powder of refractory materials and an ethyl silicate hydrolysis solution acting as a caking agent. The pattern is soaked into this muddy material and the surface of the pattern is coated with the refractory material. 100W150 mesh zircon sand is sprinkled over the coating before it is dried up. This procedure is repeated for several times and a mold crust composed of the refractory material coating layer is formed on the surface of the pattern. Then, this is soaked into water or put in humid atmospheres and the pattern is eluted. Thus molds for precision casting can be produced from the mold crust.
