Abstract

Ingot moulds, sand or ceramic foundry moulds and cores, and graphite or ceramic crucibles are coated with a composition comprising humic and lignosulphonic acids or ammonium or alkali or alkaline-earth metal salts thereof. Also present may be water, antifreeze, e.g. ethylene glycol, bactarioides, e.g. pantachlorophenol, and alkali. The pH is preferably >9.5. The mould may be coated when at room temperature to 1000 F., e.g. by brushing, dipping, pouring or spraying an aqueous slurry, or by blowing or dusting the composition as a dry powder. The coating repels splashes of molten metal and prevents their adherence to the mould. Specification 1,216,772 is referred to.
