Abstract
672,535. Moulding processes; mould compositions. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd. Feb. 1, 1951 [Feb. 6, 1950; April 3, 1950; Nov. 16, 1950], Nos. 3004/50, 8362/50, and 28082/50. Class 83 (i). [Also in Group V] A refractory mould is made by (a), coating a destructible pattern, e.g. of wax, with an emulsion containing finely-powdered refractory filler and a binder, e.g. alumina, sodium silicate and water and wetting and defoaming agents; (b) allowing to dry; (c) investing in a slurry containing sand and cement; (d) vibrating; (e) removing excess of water; and (f) drying and baking. After the step (a) above the coated pattern may have applied to it dry powder which may be fine or coarse alumina or crushed coke, activated carbon or alumina, or silica gel. This assists drying and may roughen the coating. After the step (b) above the pattern may be dipped in or otherwise coated with ethyl silicate, neat or in solution, and dried again. This treatment may be repeated as required. The slurry (c) may comprise sillimanite or molochite, which is a by-product of the china clay industry and comprises aluminium silicate, and Portland cement.
