Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a slurry which is easy to handle during forming of ceramic coating layers and permits production of molds of high strength by containing a vinyl acetate bond in a colloidal silicate binder of refractory slurry.
CONSTITUTION: Refractory powder of silica base such as molten quartz or silica or electromolten and calcined alumina and an aqueous colloidal silica soln. such as water-base silica sol, or alkyl silicate are mixed. Further, a vinyl acetate bond is added to this aqueous soln. to prepare the slurry for molds. It is necessary to use said bond by thoroughly stirring in the aqueous soln. The green sand mold strength of the mold is improved by the addition of said bond and as the amount thereof is larger, the mold of the higher strength is obtained. In contrast with this, the mold strength after calcining is decreased by the addition of said bond, and there is the effect that its sand strippability is improved, but the above-mentioned effect has a tendency to saturate with the increasing amount of addition, and the proper amount is about 2W20wt%.
