669,130. Moulding processes; mould materials. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Aug. 22, 1950 [Aug. 22, 1949], No. 21790/49. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (i). In a method of making a mould in which a wax pattern is invested in a refractory material and subsequently melted out, the pattern is given a coating of a fine refractory suspended in a silicate binding liquid without a hydrolysing agent followed by a coating of a refractory damped by a hydrolysing agent, which latter causes gelling of the silicate binder. The coating material containing no hydrolysing agent preferably comprises a fine refractory such as flint powder, alumina, sillimanite, zirconia or mixtures thereof suspended in ethyl silicate and a condensing agent such as piperidine or monoethanolamine. The second coating comprises a fine refractory such as fireclay grog wetted with a mixture of methylated spirits and water. When the ethyl silicate has gelled, the process may be repeated to build up a thicker layer on the pattern before the final investment in a water-borne refractory or in a suspension of a refractory in a liquid containing ethyl silicate and having a gelling time of about eight hours. Before the first-mentioned coating, the pattern may be sprayed with a mixture of fine refractory suspended in soap solution, sodium silicate and hydrochloric acid, the latter serving to condense the sodium silicate and bind the coating. After the wax pattern has been melted out, the mould is heated to approximately 1000‹ C. before casting. Specification 635,959 is referred to.
