Abstract

248,289. Todd, H. Nov. 9, 1925. Mould and core materials.-A permanent mould for casting metals is made from a mixture of sillimanite or fibrolite, plaster of paris, and a fibrous material, with or without other usual moulding materials. The sillimanite may vary from 40 per cent to 85 per cent, the plaster from 5 per cent to 8 per cent, and the fibre from 2 per cent of cow hair to 7 per cent of asbestos by volume. 20 per cent to 30 per cent of monazite sand (silicate of zirconium) or other sand containing rare minerals, 10 per cent to 13 per cent of coke dust, 10 per cent to 13 per cent of ganister, and 3 per cent to 5 per cent of china clay may also be added. The mixture is moistened with a solution of sodium silicate, rammed about the pattern, and backed with strong sand and reinforcing rods. The mould is dried at a temperature rising to 500‹ C. in 12 hours or more and coated with wet mineral blacking. The material may also be used for repairing moulds.
