Abstract

A light-weight cellular concrete, comprising one part by weight of Portland cement, 0.3-1.5 parts of pulverized fuel ash, and 0.5-4.7 parts of sand, is prepared by mixing the cement, ash, and sand, adding in succession water to form a creamy slurry, aluminium powder in suspension in a wetting-agent, and alkali, the mix being finally poured into moulds and cured. Curing is preferably effected by allowing the mass to stand in the mould in a humid atmosphere at room temperature for a number of hours and then, after removing from the mould, in saturated steam. There may be present in the mix 0.001-0.005 part by weight of powdered aluninium, 1.2-3.5 millilitres per pound of cement of a 30 per cent caustic soda solution, a small proportion of a non-ionic wetting agent, e.g. "Lissapol N" (Registered Trade Mark), and water. The Portland cement, sand and fuel ash are first mixed dry, water is added and mixing continued, the aluminium powder in suspension in the wetting-agent is thoroughly incorporated, and the caustic soda solution is then added.
