Abstract

535,224. Mould materials. SOC. D'ELECTROCHIMIE D'ELECTRO-METALLURGIE ET DES ACIERIES ELECTRIQUES D'UGINE. Oct. 13, 1939, No. 27891. Convention date, Nov. 5, 1938. [Class 83 (i)] To prevent local fusion of foundry moulds and cores, particularly as described in Specifications 319,777, [Class 83 (i)], 351,592, and 356,245; they are faced, wholly or in part, with a material comprising mainly an oxygenated compound of zirconium bound with subhydrated Portland or alumina cement. A mixture of 100 parts by weight of zirconium oxide or silicate, 13 parts of Portland cement and enough water to make it mouldable is tamped about the pattern to form a layer of inch to over 2 inches thick and then sand and cement mixture, green or dry sand, cinders, or the like, is applied. The Specification states that other basic oxides, such as magnesia, and most refractory materials are worthless to replace the zirconium compounds.
