Abstract

A mould for use in lost wax casting is made by coating a wax pattern with a thin coating of fine material that is to form the surface of the mould, applying to the thin coating a waterproofing compound containing a non-water-soluble cellulose derivative, and then investing the coated waterproofed wax pattern with a body of coarser material to form the body of the mould. The cellulose derivative may be cellulose acetate, and may be mixed with plasticiser and dissolved in solvent: non-solvent may be added to slow up the drying rate. The fine and coarser material may be liquid suspensions of silica, zircon, zironia, sillimanite, alumina, ground firebrick, refractory cement or calcined aluminium silicate or a mixture of these. The fine coating may be applied to the wax pattern by brushing, spraying or dipping, and may be applied as several consecutive layers each of which is covered with waterproofing compound before the next is applied.
