Abstract

In the process of the parent Specification, for making a shell mould in precision casting, a wax pattern is provided with a multiplicity of coatings of a refractory material by dipping, to form a self-supporting vapour-permeable shell, and the wax pattern is dissolved out by a hot vapour of a solvent for the wax. In the present invention the initial coating only is formed from refractory material suspended in a silica sol. The silica content of the sol may be 15 to 30 per cent. by weight. The refractory material may be zirconium silicate or oxide, alumina or silica.
