Abstract

1,048,720. Making refractory shell moulds. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Dec. 3, 1964 [Dec. 4, 1963], No. 47845/63. Heading B5A. In a method of manufacturing shell moulds for castings, a wax pattern is given from one to three coats of refractory ceramic material, the pattern is removed and the shell given at least one further coat of ceramic material, each said further coat being hot-air dried, and finally firing the shell. The coats are applied by dipping in a refractory slurry (e.g. a waterbased silicate mixed with a finely ground quartz, fused silica, alumina or zircon), and dusting with refractory powder. The wax pattern may be removed by heating in a bath of solvent such as perchloroethylene or trichloroethylene or by using steam under pressure.
