Abstract

In making a metal-casting mould by investing a pattern in a slurry of refractory material a hexametaphosphate is used as a binder, 0.01 to 2 per cent. of the commercial sodium salt may be used as a dilute agreons solution. The refractory should be free from magnesia and calcium sulphate and may include silica, sillimanite, zircon or other refractory oxide or silicate. For example, 100 grams of silica, ground and screened to an average particle size of 3 to 5 microns, may be mixed with 34 c.c. of a 0.25 per cent. solution of the binder. Other examples are given.
