Abstract

676,538. Refractory compositions. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. Sept. 20, 1949 [Oct. 4, 1948], No. 24147/49. Drawings to Specification. Class 22 Mullite-stabilizing alumina pebbles are prepared from a plastic mix of finely comminuted alumina and aluminium silicate, the silica content varying between 0.3 and 12 per cent by weight of the free alumina and the mix containing not more than 1 per cent free silica and impurities, by forming spheres from the mix, drying the spheres, calcining at 2900‹ to 3200‹F for at least 2 hours and until their porosity lies between 5 and 20 per cent, and the average crystal size of the alumina lies between 0.5 and 50 microns. Ball clay, kaolin, andalusite, kyanite, sillimanite or mixtures thereof may be used as the aluminium silicate. In the case of an alumina-rich silicate pre-calcining at 2500‹-2700‹F is preferred to prevent future volume changes. Plasticizers, e.g. carboxy methyl cellulose may be added. Both ingredients should have a particle size within the range 150-400 (Standard U.S. screen scale).
