Abstract

A refractory composition comprises non-acid grain material as its principal ingredient and as a binder finely-divided magnesia and a chromium compound soluble in water or alcohol. Specified grain materials are magnesia, alumina, scrap refractories, zirconia, natural spinels, e.g. chromite and picotite, and artificial spinels, e.g. Mg0, Al2O3 and Mg0.Cr2O3. Preferably such grains do not contain more than 4 per cent. silica. A mixture of grains of periclase and spinel may be used. Up to 15 per cent. of the chromium compound can be present, but when, e.g. 0.5 per cent. only is present, another bond, e.g. MgCl2, which forms a chemical bond, is preferably also used. Silica, of a particle size below 44 microns, may be included in the binder, e.g. rice hull ash.
