669,044. Refractory composition. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. Aug. 27, 1948 [Sept. 8, 1947], No. 22680/48. Class 22] A castable refractory comprises aluminasilica grog, raw cyanite, and a bonding medium consisting substantially entirely of a pulverized mixture of raw clay and a high alumina hydraulic cement. Preferred ranges, by weight, of the components are grog 70-75 per cent, 3-15 per cent cyanite and 15-26 per cent of bond. The grog may be calcined kaolin, bauxite or cyanite or a blended mixture thereof and so proportioned that, together with the other alumina containing components, the fired refractory will contain between 55 and 65 per cent alumina. The components are size graded. The alumina cement may be obtained from a mixture of aluminium hydrate, calcium carbonate and plaster of Paris, and a preferred range of the finished cement, by weight, is calcium oxide 23-26 per cent, alumina 70-75 per cent, silica less than 2 per cent, iron oxide less than 1 per cent. The clay is limited to 2-8 per cent of the total batch weight.
