Abstract

A method of forming a mould or core for precision casting of hollow turbine blades &c. consists in adding an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate to an excess of an aqueous solution of a mineral acid, mixing with the acid reaction products so formed a stable substantially electrolyte-free colloidal dispersion of silica in water and using the resultant liquid to bind a refractory mould material, such as mullite, sillimanite, calcined kaolin or fireclay grog, with zircon or zirconia. Wetting agents and/or foam inhibitors may be added. Thus, a diluted sodium silicate solution is mixed with dilute nitric acid, and ethyl hexanol as a foam inhibitor and "Teepol" (R.T.M.) as a wetting agent are added. The liquid is further acidified by adding concentrated hydrochloric acid and the colloidal dispersion of silica in water is then added immediately. The resulting liquid is added to equal parts by weight of zircon sand and calcined kaolin. The Provisional Specification describes also the use of other alkali metal or ammonium silicates in place of sodium or potassium silicate.
