Abstract

1435988 Refractory binder IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 11 Nov 1974 [30 Nov 1973] 55664/73 Heading C3N A mixed binder, suitable for use as a binder for refractory aggregate, e.g. in moulds used in nesting casting, comprises a mixture of a solid aluminium phosphate binder and a setting agent therefor comprising a calcium phosphate, the proportion by weight of aluminium phosphate binder: calcium phosphate setting agent being in the range 1 : 2 to 10 : 1. The aluminium phosphate may be Al(H 2 PO 4 ) 3 or Al 2 (HPO 4 ) 3 or it may be a complex phosphate of aluminium containing at least one acidic anion other than phosphate and containing one or more chemically bound molecules of water and/ or one or more chemically-bound oxygencontaining organic molecules, e.g. aluminium chlorophosphate ethanolate AlPClH 25 C 8 O 8 , aluminium bromophosphate ethanolate Al- PBrH 25 C 8 O 8 and aluminium chlorophosphate hydrate AlPClH 11 O 9 . The setting agent is preferably a calcium orthophosphate which may be an acid salt or hydrated. The refractory aggregate may be silica, alumina, zirconia, zirconium silicate, titanium dioxide, sillimanite, andasulite, mullite, a specific calcined clay procelain, china clay, silicon carbide, tungsten carbide, silicon nitride, boron nitride, boron, asbestos, ferric oxide, chromium oxide, chromite, mica or graphite. The mixed binder may be made by dry-mixing the solid aluminium phosphate binder and the calcium phosphate setting agent with a solution of the binder and subsequently removing the solvent. The mixed binder is suitably present in the dry refractory composition in an amount 1-40% by weight of the composition. The essentially dry refractory composition of refractory aggregate and mixed binder may be mixed with a liquid solvent for the aluminium phosphate to form a cold-settable material. The amount of dispersant may be 0À5-25% by weight of the material and is preferably a lower alkanol, ethylene glycol or monoethyl ether. The cold-settable material may be foamed by incorporating fluorocarbon propellants, SF 6 , CO 2 , oxygen or nitrogen. Other additives that may be incorporated are surfactants, pigments, bentonite, cellulose derivatives, fly ash or foamed polymer chips. The cold-settable material may be applied to a metal substrate.
