Abstract
1429555 Cold setting refractory composition IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 14 May 1974 [30 May 1973] 25759/73 Heading C3N A composition in particulate form comprises a mixture of a calcium silicate and a solid watersoluble aluminium phosphate or phosphate ester, which mixture on addition of water does not attain a pH greater than 3À2. The aluminium phosphate may be Al 2 (HPO 4 ) 3 or Al(H 2 PO 4 ) 3 but is preferably a complex phosphate of aluminium containing at least one chemically-bound hydroxylic compound ROH, where R is hydrogen or an organic group, and at least one anionic group of a strong inorganic acid (other than oxyphosphorus acid) or of a carboxylic acid, e.g. aluminium chlorophosphate ethanolate (AlPClH 25 C 8 O 8 ), aluminium bromophosphate ethanolate (AlPBrH 25 C 8 O 8 ), or aluminium chlorophosphate hydrate (AlPClH 11 O 9 ). The calcium silicate is preferably wollastonite but Portland cement may be used on its own or in admixture with wollastonite. The weight ratio of calcium silicate to aluminium phosphate may be in the range 1 : 200-2 : 1. The composition is prepared by mixing the components in the dry state and when used water is added until a convenient consistency is obtained and the wet composition may be used as a mortar, a castable composition, or in the production of refractory bricks. Refractory aggregates, e.g. silica, alumina, zirconia, aluminium silicate, zirconium silicate, mica, mullite, chamotte, kyanite and a synthetic clay may be added, suitably in an amount 1-50 parts by weight for every part by weight of the composition of the invention. Other ingredients added may be pigments, bentonite, cellulose derivatives, fly ash or foamed polymer chips, and surfactants. Numerous specific examples disclose compositions containing refractory aggregate of specified size distribution and the mixture of calcium silicate and phosphate.
