Abstract
1356249 Silicate hydrolysates ZIRCONAL PROCESSES Ltd 21 Oct 1971 [5 Nov 1970] 52695/70 Headings C1A and C1J [Also in Divisions C3 and C4] In the production of a hydrolysate by the mixing of ethyl silicate, at least one monohydric totally water miscible alcohol solvent and dilute strong aqueous acid (a) the proportion by volume of acid added to ethyl silicate added is not less than 0À25 : 1 and not sufficiently great as to impair the homogeneity in the resulting hydrolysate, (b) the volume of alcohol solvent added is not less than 5 times the volume of acid added and (c) the acid added is not less than 0À25 normal. A "strong" acid is defined to be an acid as strong as "orthophosphoric acid". The alcohol may be methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, propyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol and the acid, hydrochloric, sulphuric, orthophosphoric or sulphamic acids. The hydrolysate may be gelled with alkali, e.g. ammonia, an aqueous/polyhydric alcohol dispersion of lightly calcined magnesia or an aqueous solution containing ammonia and an ammonia salt of a carboxylic acid (e.g. the formate, acetate, benzoate, and citrate). The use of a wetting agent, i.e. an oleic acid-ethylene oxide adduct in an ammonia solution containing ammonium acetate is described in the specification. Methyl ethyl ketone may be added to the hydrolysate to improve storage life. In a typical example using hydrochloric acid, ethyl alcohol (64 over-proof) was mixed with iN hydrochloric acid (20 ml) and ethyl silicate (80 ml.). In another typical example using orthophosphoric acid, water (40 ml.) containing orthophosphoric acid (4 g.) was mixed with 640-p-ethyl alcohol (220 ml.) and ethyl silicate (160 ml.). In Example 6 sulphamic acid (20 g.) were dissolved in water (20 ml.) and to the solution was added 640-p-ethyl alcohol (110 ml.) and ethyl silicate (80 ml.). Shaped refractory articles may be made by mixing the hydrolysate with an alkaline gelling agent, forming the mixture into a slurry with powdered refractory aggregate, casting into moulds, allowing gelation to take place, and firing. Refractory aggregates may be one or more of (a) aluminium oxide, (b) aluminium silicate, (c) aluminosilicate, (d) magnesium oxide, (e) magnesium silicate, (f) zircon, (g) zirconium oxide, (h) silicon oxide, (i) silicon carbide, (j) spinel, (k) fire clay grog, (1) calcined china clay, (m) kaolin, (n) sillimanite, (o) mullite, (p) magnesite, (q) chromemagnesite, (r) olivine and (s) forsterite. The use of (a), (n), (f), (f) + (g) and (a) + (1) is exemplified.
