Abstract

A composition comprises an aqueous silica sol containing finely divided refractory material and a water-soluble carboxylic ester of a hexitol or a hexitol anhydride, or a poly(oxyalkylene) ether thereof. The refractory material may be zircon, fused silica, flint, alumina or aluminium silicates, e.g. sillimanite or mullte, and there may be 66-500 parts by weight of refractory per 100 parts by weight silica sol. The refractory may have particle size less than 200 B.S.G. mesh. The ester may be a hexitol or sorbitan ester, e.g. sorbitan monolaurate; the weight of the ester may be less than 5% of the weight of the refractory. The silica sol may be made from an alkali metal silicate, and the sol may have SiO2:M2O weight ratio of between 80:1 and 150:1, M being the alkali metal, e.g. Na. The concentration of silica in the sol may be 10-50% wt. The composition is readily redisperesed after standing. It may be used in the shell-moulding process to form metal-casting moulds.ALSO:A composition comprises an aqueous silica sol containing finely divided fused silica and a water-soluble carboxylic ester of a hexitol or a hexitol anhydride, or a poly(oxyalkylene) ether thereof. There may be 66-500 parts by weight of fused silica per 100 parts by weight silica sol. The fused silica may have particle size less than 200 B.S.S. mesh. The ester may be a hexitol or sorbitan ester, e.g. sorbitan monolaurate; the weight of the ester may be less than 5% of the weight of the fused silica. The silica sol may be made from an alkali metal silicate, and the sol may have SiO2:M2O weight ratio of between 80:1 and 150:1, M being the alkali metal, e.g. Na. The concentration of silica in the sol may be 10-50% wt. The composition is readily redispersed after standing. It may be used in the shell-moulding process to form metal-casting moulds.
