Abstract
An aqueous solution of potassium and sodium silicates, in which the weight ratio SiO2:(K2O + Na2O) is at least 3:1 and the weight ratio K2O:Na2O is from 2:1 to 4:1, may be prepared by dissolving silica, preferably in the form of a silica hydrogel or freshly precipitated amorphous silica, in an aqueous alkaline solution containing sodium and potassium, for example as the hydroxides or the commercially available silicates. Foreign ions are desirably absent. The solution may be employed as a binder for refractory particles, for example in the preparation of moulds, and may in this role be hardened, for example by exposing to carbon dioxide or by drying. Refractory particles include silica, sillimanite, zircon, calcined kaolin, hydrated aluminium silicate, and mullite. Small amounts of water-soluble organic hydroxy compounds may be incorporated in the solution, for example glycerol or ethylene glycol when it is desired to reduce drying rate, or ethanol when it is desired to increase it. Wetting agents, for example an alkyl phenol/ethylene oxide condensate, may be present.
