Abstract

A slip-casting process for making refractory articles employs a slurry comprising a finely-divided refractory material, a silica sol, and a minor amount of an organic stabilising agent, the pH of the slurry being such that it remains homogeneous on standing. Refractory materials exemplified are alumina, carborundum, chromite, silica, and silicates such as zirconium silicate and sillimanite. Suitable stabilizing agents are non-ionic and cationic surface-active agents, and gelatine. Non-ionic agents specified are condensates of an alkylene oxide, e.g. ethylene oxide, with fatty alcohols, alylphenols, e.g. an octylcresol, and alkyl mercaptans, e.g. a dodecyl mercaptan. A polyethylene glycol fatty acid ester can also be used. Cationic agents specified are quarternary ammonium salts, e.g. cetyl pyridinium- and cetyl trimethylammonium-bromides. The pH and viscosity of the slurry are controlled by the addition of acid or alkali, or where non-ionic surface-active agents are used by the addition of an onionic surface-active agent, such as an alkylaryl sulphonate, e.g. sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate; a salt of an alkyl hydrogen sulphate, e.g. sodium lauryl- or sodium cetyl sulphate; or an alkyl sulphosuccinate, e.g. sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate. Specifications 607,696, 645,703, 649,897, 654,850 and 662,423 [all in Group III] are referred to.
