Abstract

Polyethylene glycol derivatives for use in colour developing solutions comprise compounds of the formula: R-(CH2 CH2O)n-CH2 CH2-R in which R is OH or (a) a radical containing a quaternary N atom and attached thereby to the ethylene oxide chain, (b) an acyloxy radical containing an anionic group, (c) HO SO2 O-, or (d) R1 NHCO.O where R1 is a radical containing an anionic group, and n is 12 to 90. Specified quaternary derivatives (a) are polyethoxyethyl-bis-pyridinium methyl sulphonate and bis-tri beta hydroxyethyl) ammonium methyl sulphonate, prepared by adding methane sulphonyl chloride to a solution of polyethylene glycol (e.g. Carbowax 1540) and reacting the bismethane sulphonate with pyridine or triethanolamine. (b) Polyethoxyethyl-bis (3, 5- disulphophenate) is prepared as its sodium salt by adding 3, 5- disulphenyl-chloride-chloro-benzene to Carbowax in benzene and reacting the product with sodium hydroxide. (c) Polyethoxyethylbis-sulphuric acid is prepared by adding chlorosulphonic acid to a solution of polyethylene oxide in dichloromethane while bubbling nitrogen through the solution. (d) Polyethoxymethylbiscarboxyglutamic acid is prepared as its sodium salt by heating Carbowax with dimethyl a -isocyanate-glutarate and treating the product with sodium hydroxide.
