Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <F\1> in which R is a C1- 20 alkyl group, R7 is an ethylene group, Y is a hydroxy group and q and q1 each represent an integer such that the total of the 4q's and q1 has an average value of 6-100. The compounds are made by reacting the appropriate N-methyl-gluconamine with ethylene oxide or a polyethylene glycol. The pentahydroxy compounds can be converted to the corresponding penta-methane-sulphonate esters by reaction with methylsulphonyl chloride and these esters further reacted with tertiary bases to give compounds in which Y is <FORM:1069052/C2/1> where R2-4 are C1- 4 alkyl groups and X- is an acid anion. The examples relate to compounds in which R is lauryl and the methane sulphonate esters and pyridinium methane sulphonate salts thereof.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1069052/C3/1> in which R is a C1- 20 alkyl group, R7 is an ethylene group, Y is a hydroxy group and q and q1 each represent an integer such that the total of the 4q's and q1 has an average value of 6-100.
