Abstract

Tertiary amines which have in their free base form the formula <FORM:0639217/IV (b)/1> where R is an alkyl or alkenyl radical containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms inclusive and R1 is hydrogen or a methyl radical are obtained by reacting a benzhydryl compound of the formula <FORM:0639217/IV (b)/2> with an aliphatic hydroxy compound of the formula <FORM:0639217/IV (b)/3> where X is halogen when Y is <FORM:0639217/IV (b)/4> and X is <FORM:0639217/IV (b)/5> when Y is halogen and R1 and R have the same significance as given above. Alternatively, a benzhydryl alkyl or alkenyl amine is reacted with ethylene oxide or 1,2-propylene oxide. Detailed examples are given.
