Abstract
A slurry for making refractory articles comprises silica sol, a powdered refractory material and a minor proportion of a non-ionic or cationic surface active agent, the pH of the slurry being such that it remains homogeneous on standing. Refractory materials specified are alumina, carborundum, chromite, silica, zircon or sillimanite. Non-ionic agents are condensates of an alkylene oxide (e.g. ethylene oxide) with an organic compound containing a large non-polar group and an active hydrogen e.g. long-chain fatty alcohol, an alkyl phenol, a fatty acid or a long-chain alkyl mercaptan. Cationic agents are quaternary ammonium salts, e.g. cetyl pyridinium bromide or cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide. Anionic agents, e.g. alkyl aryl sulphonates, alkyl hydrogen sulphate salts, or an alkyl sulphosuccinate, may also be present as viscosity reducing aids.
