Abstract
1,212,883. Ink compositions for flow pens. PAPER MATE MFG. CO. 9 April, 1968 [13 April, 1967], No. 17101/68. Heading C4A. Ink compositions for writing instruments with a porous tip comprise water, a colorant, and one or more water-soluble surfactants at least one of which has anti-static properties, the ink having a surface tension not exceeding 37 dynes/ cm., preferably 31-37 dynes/cm. A single surfactant, which constitutes 0À1-3% by weight of the ink, may be (i) a non-ionic ester of a fatty acid and a polyalkenoxylated polyol, e.g. polyoxyethylene etherified fatty acid ester of anhydrosorbitol, polyethylene glycol laurate, or polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate; (ii) an ampholytic alkylamino carboxylic acid where R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are C 8 -C 24 alkyl and C 1 -C 8 alkyl respectively; (iii) a cationic amide-linked quaternary amine where R<SP>3</SP> is C 7 -C 24 alkyl, R<SP>4</SP> is C 1 -C 6 alkyl, and R<SP>5</SP>, R<SP>6</SP>, R<SP>7</SP> are each C 1 -C 6 alkyl or hydroxy C 1 -C 6 ' alkyl, and X is a mineral acid residue, e.g. stearamido - propyl - dimethyl -# - hydroxyethyl-ammonium nitrate or dihydrogen phosphate; (iv) a non-ionic polyoxyethylene alkylamine R<SP>8</SP>NH(R<SP>9</SP>O) Z H, where R<SP>8</SP>, R<SP>9</SP> are C 1 -C 6 alkyl and C 2 -C 4 alkyl respectively, z is 10-40; (v) a cationic quaternary ammonium compound [R<SP>10</SP>Nabc]<SP>+</SP>X-, where R<SP>10</SP> is C 7 -C 2o alkyl, a, b and c are each C 1 -C 6 alkyl, and X is an anion; (iv) an anionic partial phosphate ester of a C 8 -C 24 alkanol, or an anionic ether-linked diaromatic having a long chain aliphatic group and one or two sulphonate groups, e.g. dodecyldiphenyl oxide sodium disulphonate. Alternatively, two surfactants, one having the requisite surface tension reducing property and the other the anti-static property, can be used in combination, e.g. isooctyl phenyl polyethoxy ethanol + a polyoxyethylene alkylamine. In examples the ink to which the surfactant(s) is (are) added consists of 8 p.b.w. anthraquinone blue 3G, 8 p.b.w. ethylene glycol, 0À2 p.b.w. methyl p-hydroxybenzoate (fungicide) and 93À3 p.b.w. water.
