1460922 Sizing compositions for paper AKZO NV 11 April 1974 [14 April 1973] 16409/74 Heading C3U [Also in Divisions C2 and D2] Sizing compositions for paper comprise a degraded or cationic starch and, as sizing agent, a N,N<SP>1</SP>-alkylsubstituted aspartic imide of Formulae I, II or III in which R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or alkyl; R<SP>11</SP> is hydrogen; R 1 and R 2 each independently represents alkyl optionally interrupted by -O-, -S-, -N=, -CO-O-, -NH-CO-, or groups or represents -[CH 2 ) n -R or where R 3 and R 4 each independently represents hydrogen, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl or alkyl which contains terminal carboxylic acid or alkyl ester groups; R represents alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl, hydroxyl, hydroxyalkyl, hydroxyalkoxyalkyl, thioalkoxy, alkanoyl, alkoxycarbonyl, alkylcarboxyamido or alkylaminocarbonyl; Y represents hydroxyl or other functional groups inert up to 200 C. under sizing conditions; m is an integer from 2 to 8 and n is an integer equal to or greater than 2, with the proviso that the imides contain at least one alkyl radical containing at least 16 carbon atoms.
