Abstract
Detergent compositions comprise (a) a surface-active agent, suitably sodium or triethanolamine lauryl sulphate, or a non-ionic compound; (b) an organic solvent mixture of a hydrophobic liquid, such as turpentine, light petroleum, kerosene or xylene, with a hydrophilic liquid, such as ethanol, isopropanol or 2-dimethyl-4-oxymethyl-1 : 3-dioxolan; (c) a water-repellent silicone oil, suitably a dimethyl silicone mixture of viscosity 10-200 centistokes; (d) an emulsion-stabilizing agent, preferably colloidal silica; and (e) a hydroxycarboxylic acid, such as citric or tartaric acid, which should desirably be soluble in the surface active agent (a). Surface active agent (a) preferably has a viscosity of at least 3000 c.p.s., and usually constitutes 45-60 per cent of the composition; (b) constitutes about 25-50 per cent of the composition, the amount of hydrophobic liquid being generally about four times that of the hydrophilic liquid; (c) constitutes about 3-10 per cent; (d) constitutes usually not more than 5 per cent; and (e) about 0.5-5 per cent. The composition may be buffered with a little ammonia, and may also include a little abrasive polishing material, such as chalk or jewellers' rouge. Water may be present in amounts which do not cause phase separation.
