Abstract

A skin cleaning composition for use without addition of water comprises (a) an organic solvent for skin contaminants, suitably a mineral oil of cosmetic grade, (b) a non-ionic surface active agent which is preferably a condensate of 2-20 mols of ethylene oxide with 1 mol of a fatty acid having 12-22 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain, (c) a synthetic hydrophilic acid polymer colloid thickening agent other than a cellulose derivative and (d) water, the composition having a pH of 5-7. (c) is suitably a copolymer of about 99% by weight of acrylic acid or a homologue thereof and about 1% of a polyallyl sucrose in which the sucrose molecule has 5-6 allyl groups. Sodium hydroxide is generally added to the composition to neutralize the acidity of this constituent. The composition is produced in a creamy form by dissolving the surface active agent in the solvent and the colloid in the water and mixing the solutions. The breaking qualities of the composition are improved by incorporating small quantities (up to 2%) of tertiary amines having one alkyl group and two polyoxyethylene groups attached to the amino nitrogen atom. Corrosion inhibitors such as oleoyl sarcosine and 2-hydroxypropylamine nitrite, and anti-evaporants such as propylene or diethylene glycol are also desirably incorporated.
