Abstract

An aqueous preparation for softening and lubricating silk or artificial fibres or yarns prior to knitting comprises (1) an anionic lubricating softening agent and (2) a terpene alcohol or an aliphatic alcohol which has a boiling point above 100 DEG C., is volatile with water vapour and is at least sparingly soluble in water. The lubricating softening agent, which may contain an unbranched aliphatic chain of 16-18 carbon atoms, is (1) a condensation product of a fatty acid methylolamide and thioglycollic acid or (2) a monoester of an aliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acid, e.g. maleic, succinic or phthalic acid, with an aliphatic compound having a carbon chain of at least 12 carbon atoms and an alcoholic hydroxyl group, such as cetyl alcohol, octadecyl alcohol, octadecyl - b - oxyethyl ether, octadecyl - oxyethyl thio-ether, N-(b -oxyethyl) - palmitic acid amide, N-(b -oxyethyl) - oleic acid amide, N - (2 - oxypropyl) - stearic acid amide or stearic acidb -oxyethyl ester. The alcoholic constituent may be borneol, fenchyl alcohol, a - terpineol, pine oil, 2 - ethyl hexanol, isooctanol or trimethyl hexanol. The composition may also contain a sulphonated benzimidazole substituted at the 2-carbon atom by an alkyl radical of high molecular weight, a monoester of 4 - sulphophthalic acid with a higher fatty alcohol, a fatty alcohol sulphonate, an alkyl aryl sulphonate, a condensation product of a higher fatty acid with an aliphatic oxy- or aminosulphonic acid, a salt of a fatty acid such as coconut oil ftty acid, palmitic acid or stearic acid or a polyether derived from ethylene oxide and a higher fatty alcohol or amine. The composition may further contain ethylene glycol monoethyl ether or ethylene glycol monomethyl ether and the sodium or dicyclohexylamine salt of nitrous acid. The pH of the composition may be adjusted to from 8 to 10 with sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide, and trisodium phosphate may be added as a buffer. The composition may be applied to yarns of silk, cellulose, acetate, polyamides, polylactams, polyacrylonitrile, copolymers of acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyurethanes or terephthalic acid polyesters and may be applied to several kinds of yarn simultaneously. In examples, (1) the composition comprises the sodium salt of phthalic acid mono - octadecyl ester, the sodium salt of N - benzyl - 2 - heptadecylbenzimidazole disulphonic acid, a - terpineol, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, sodium nitrite and water, (3) the ingredients are as in (1) except that the salt of the phthalic acid ester is replaced by the sodium salt of the condensation product of 1 mol. of stearic acid methylolamide and 1 mol. of thioglycollic acid. In other examples, similar compositions also contain sodium carbonate and trisodium phosphate. In example 9, various compositions are used for treating a polyamide yarn prior to knitting. Specifications 533,219 and 581,339 [both in Group IV] are referred to.ALSO:An aqueous preparation for softening and lubricating silk or artificial fibres or yarns prior to knitting comprises (1) an anionic lubricating softening agent and (2) a terpene alcohol or an aliphatic alcohol which has a boiling point above 100 DEG C., is volatile with water vapour and is at least sparingly soluble in water. The lubricating softening agent, which may contain an unbranched aliphatic chain of 16-18 carbon atoms, is (1) a condensation product of a fatty acid methylolamide and thioglycollic acid or (2) a monoester of an alphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acid, e.g. maleic, succinic or phthalic acid, with an aliphatic compound having a carbon chain of at least 12 carbon atoms and an alcoholic hydroxyl group, such as cetyl alcohol, octadecyl alcohol, octadecyl - b - oxyethyl ether, octadecyl oxeyethyl thioether, N - (b - oxyethyl) - palmitic acid amide, N - (b -oxyethyl)-oleic acid amide, N - (2-oxypropyl) - stearic acid amide or stearic acid - b - oxyethyl ester. The alcoholic constituent may be borneol, fenchyl alcohol, a - terpineol, pine oil, 2 - ethyl hexanol, iso-octanol or trimethyl hexanol. The composition may also contain a sulphonated benzimidazole substituted at the 2-carbon atom by an alkyl radical of high molecular weight, a monoester of 4 - sulphophthalic acid with a higher fatty alcohol, a fatty alcohol sulphonate, an alkyl aryl sulphonate, a condensation product of a higher fatty acid with an aliphatic oxy- or amino-sulphonic acid, a salt of a fatty acid such as coconut oil fatty acid, palmitic acid or stearic acid or a polyether derived from ethylene oxide and a higher fatty alcohol or amine. The composition may further contain ethylene glycol monoethyl ether or ethylene glycol monomethyl ether and the sodium or dicyclohexylamine salt of nitrous acid. The pH of the composition may be adjusted to from 8 to 10 with sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide, and trisodium phosphate may be added as a buffer. In examples, (1) the composition comprises the sodium salt of phthalic acid mono-octadecyl ester, the sodium salt of N - benzyl - 2 - heptadecylbenzimidazole disulphonic acid, a - terpineol, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, sodium nitrite and water, (3) the ingredients are as in (1) except that the salt of the phthalic acid ester is replaced by the sodium salt of the condensation product of 1 mol. of stearic acid methylolamide and 1 mol. of thioglycollic acid.
