Abstract

Artificial staple fibres are treated to reduce their tendency to become electrified, by applying to them an aqueous composition in which is dissolved or dispersed an alkylolamine salt of a dibasic acid having the general formula HOOC-(CH2)n-COOH, in which n is an integer not less than 4. The fibres may be made of cellulose acetate or other cellulose ester or ether or of nylon, or casein or other protein. A triethanolamine salt is preferred and the acid used to form the salt may be sebacic, suberic, pimelic, or adipic acid. The aqueous composition may also contain an alkylolamine salt of a fatty acid such as capric, lauric, oleic, stearic, or other fatty acid, the molecule of which contains at least 10 carbon atoms. The composition may be applied by immersion, spraying, or treatment in a centrifuge. The fibres are preferably treated so that they retain 0.5-1.5 per cent of their weight of the alkylolamine-dibasic acid salt. The composition may contain the salt in a concentration of 0.5-5 per cent by weight. Specifications 376,785, 388,426, 388,427, 430,221, 433,110, and 602,048, are referred to.
