Abstract
Keratinous material, e.g. hair, is given improved strength and elasticity by treating it with a solution or dispersion having a pH of 1.5 -6 and comprising dimethylol urea or dimethylol thiourea and an acid catalyst in an organic or aqueous diluent, and drying the treated material at a temperature of from room temperature to 50 DEG C. The treating composition may contain 1 - 15% by weight of the dimethylol urea or thiourea and 0.2 - 2% by weight of the acid catalyst which may be lactic, citric, phosphoric, acetic or glycerophosphoric acid or ammonium or aluminium chloride, and the organic diluent may be ethyl alcohol, dioxane or dioxolane. The treating composition may also contain a thickener, e.g. polyvinylpyrrolidene or polyethyleneglycol. Hair may be treated with the composition after shampooing and drying by means of a towel, and may then be set and dressed.
