Abstract

An aqueous solution for waving human hair comprises 0.4 to 0.9 M. of thioglycollic acid, thiomalic acid, dimercapto-adipic acid or mixtures thereof and from 0.8 to 1.4 M. of a mixture of ammonia or a monoalkylolamine and a dialkylolamine, the amount of each of these being in the range 0.4 to 0.9 M. and the total free base being in the range 0.2 to 0.6 M. The monoalkylolamine may be monoethanolamine or mono-isopropanolamine and the dialkylolamine may be diisopropanolamine. The composition may also include a perfume, a wetting agent, a creaming agent, the "opacifying" agent described in Specification 723,349 or a sodium, ammonium or monoethanolamine normal salt of carbonic, hydrochloric, sulphuric, acetic, boric or phosphoric acid. The composition may be applied to damped hair which is then wound on curlers, when it may receive a further application of the composition, and, after a period, is rinsed and may be treated with an aqueous sodium perborate solution or may be subjected to "aerial oxidation."
