Abstract

A lotion suitable for use in the cold permanent waving of hair and in the straightening of hair comprises an aqueaus solution of a mercapton, e.g. a salt of thioglycollic such as ammonium thiogly collate, and 0.1 to 5.0% w/v of a salt of a hydrophilic coloidal acid, e.g. a salt formed from alginic acid, carboxy methyl cellulose or a carboxy polymethylene and an inorganic base, such as ammonia or sodium hydroxide, or an organic-base, such as monoethanolamine. The salt of the colloid may be employed per se or may be formed in situ by incorporating the colloid into the lotion in conjunction with a base. Hair may be waved by treating it with the lotion either before or after placing it in a desired configuration and then applying a neutraliser. The hair may be simultaneously coloured and waved by incorporating a dyestuff which is dermatologically safe for use on the scalp into the lotion. Suitable dyestuffs are preformed water soluble coal tar dyes of the acid level-dyeing type, water soluble oxidation dyestuffs, e.g. p-phenylene diamine, m-phenylenediamine, resorcinol and catechol, and basic dyestuffs if sufficiently soluble in water or a water-miscible solvent such as ethanol, e.g. Methylene Blue, Rhodamine and Rosamiline. The lotion may also contain one or more wetting agents, e.g. a polyoxyalkylene sorbitan manolaurate or an alkylaryl sulphonate, and a perfume and may be applied to the hair from a plastic "squeeze" bottle.
