Abstract

Hair and other keratinous materials are dyed by applying an aqueous or aqueous alcoholic solution of at least one ortho-dihydric phenol of the formula <FORM:0831851/IV(c)/1> wherein R represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or an aldehyde, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, carboxy, carboxyalkyl, alkoxy, nitroalkyl or nitrohydroxyalkyl group, or an amino acid residue, and developing the shade in the presence of (as oxidizing agent) an ammonium or alkali metal iodate, periodate or persulphate. The oxidizing agent may be added to the phenol solution, or the phenol solution may be applied first, whereupon excess solution is removed, optionally after rinsing and a treatment with an aqueous solution of the oxidizing agent subsequently applied. Instead of aqueous solutions, aqueous creams, pastes or jellies may similarly be utilized. Specified dihydric phenols are catechol, 4-methyl-, 4-bromo- or 4-methoxy-catechol, protocatechuic acid, protocatechualdehyde, b (3 : 4 -dihydroxy-phenyl)-(1)-alanine and a (3 : 4-dihydroxyphenyl) - b - nitro-ethanol.
