Abstract

Hair and other keratinous materials are dyed by the aerobic oxidation thereon of 1, 2, 4-trihydroxybenzene in the presence of one or more primary aliphatic or arylaliphatic amines or salts thereof at a pH of 7-12, preferably 9-11, and in the absence of sulphites, hydrosulphites and aliphatic mercaptans. An aqueous solution of the two components at the required pH may be applied to the hair followed by exposure to the atmosphere for a short time and then rinsing. Alternatively, a solution of the trihydroxy compound may be first applied, followed by a solution of the amine. The pH of the solution on the hair may be adjusted to the required value by application of a dilute solution of an alkali or alkaline buffer. Specified preferred amines are n- and iso-propylamine, n- and iso-butylamine, allylamine, n- and iso-amylamine, benzylamine and cyclohexylamine. To ensure storage stability the solution containing the trihydroxy benzene and the amine should be protected from access to oxygen and its pH may be reduced to below 7. Examples are given of the dyeing of hair, and in one case, of the dyeing of wool.
