Abstract

A composition for the permanent waving of hair comprises an aqueous solution containing a mixture comprising a minor proportion of an amine salt of thioglycollic acid and a major proportion of an inorganic salt of thioglycollic acid, e.g. ammonium thioglycollate. The amine salt is preferably an alkanolamine salt, e.g. the monoethanolamine salt. The composition which is preferably adjusted to a pH of 9.4-9.7 may contain 12 ozs. of a 40% w/w aqueous solution of the monoethanolamine salt of thioglycollic acid (estimated as thioglycollic acid) and 32 ozs. of a 40% w/w aqueous solution of ammonium thioglycollate per gallon of solution. Hair may be waved by winding a tress of hair, preferably after washing and partial drying, on a roller or mandrel which preferably has a diameter greater than 1/2 -inch, applying the permanent waving composition to the wound tress and heating the wound tress sufficiently both to wave the tress and to dry the hair before it is removed from the roller or mandrel. Heating may be effected with an exothermic pad or by an electric resistance wire. Alternatively, the hair may be waved by other methods in which the tress is removed from the roller or mandrel upon completion of the action of the permanent waving reagent and, after washing, the tress is then either set by rewinding on a roller or mandrel or is manipulated into position before drying.
