Abstract
A method of waving human hair comprises applying to the hair an aqueous solution of a borohydride of an alkali metal whose atomic weight exceeds 20, at a molarity of 0.5 to 1.6, and maintaining the hair in the desired configuration while in contact with the solution. The borohydride salt has the empiric formula MBH4, where M is an alkali metal. The aqueous solution may also contain boric acid, glycine, aspartic acid, arginine, asparagine, sorbitol or mannitol, or mixtures of these compounds, or a mixture of boric acid and calcium chloride, to adjust the pH within the range 8.5 to 11.0, urea, methyl urea or ethyl urea as a swelling agent for the hair, or thioglycollic acid or the sodium, potassium, monoethanolamine or ethylene diamine salt thereof, or cysteine hydrochloride, as a hair reducing agent. The aqueous solution may be applied to the hair, which may be either dry or damp, either before or after winding upon curling rods, and after a period of time the hair may be rinsed with water and the development of the wave may be completed by aerial oxidation or by application of an aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide or sodium perborate. The rinsing step may be omitted. The ingredients for the aqueous solution may be made up into a dry composition. In examples, the aqueous solution comprises (1) potassium borohydride and boric acid, to which calcium chloride may be added, (2) potassium borohydride and glycine, (3) potassium borohydride and mannitol, (4) potassium borohydride, mannitol and glycine, (6) sodium borohydride and urea, (14) the monoethanolamine salt of thioglycollic acid and potassium borohydride, (15) the ethylene diamine salt of thioglycollic acid and potassium borohydride, (16) cysteine hydrochloride, ethylene diamine and potassium borohydride, (17) thioglycollic acid, sodium hydroxide and sodium borohydride, (20) potassium borohydride, ethylene diamine thioglycollate, boric acid, mannitol, urea and ethylene diamine.
