Abstract

A composition for use in the cold or tepid permanent waving of human hair comprises an aqueous solution of a salt of thioglycollic acid containing 0,1-25% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition, of dairy cream and/or milk and having a pH of 7,0-10,0 and a normality in respect of thioglycollic acid of 0,2-1,8. Solutions containing 8-10% by weight of ammonium thioglycollate are preferably used and the composition preferably contains 0,5-20% by weight of dairy milk and/or cream, e.g. 1-5% of single dairy cream and/or 5-15% of dairy milk. The pH of the composition may be adjusted by the addition of alkali, e.g. ammonium or sodium hydroxide, and the composition may also contain perfumes, wetting agents, opacifiers, humectants and hair-conditioning agents. The composition may be applied to the hair either before or after arranging it in the desired configuration and the hair then set by treatment with a neutralizer or oxidizing agent. The process is applicable to the waving of human hair and also for the straightening of curly hair.
