Abstract

Hair is permanently waved or straightened by treating it with a urea-containing aqueous solution or emulsion of a mercapto compound, e.g. ammonium thioglycolate, or an organic sulphur compound which can split up to give a mercapto compound, e.g. dithiodiglycolide, carbaminyl thioglycolic acid and ethyl xanthogen acetic acid, having a pH of 5-9 and adding urease or a urease-containing substance before, during or after placing the hair on curlers or curling the hair on cut-to-size strips of absorbent material, e.g. paper or cotton fabric, impregnated with urease preparation solution. The hair may be wetted with water, wound on to curlers with the inter position of a urease-containing paper and then wetted with an acid thioglycolate solution to which shortly before use urea has been added or the hair may be wetted with the acid urea-containing thioglycolate solution and curled in the urease-containing paper. Alternatively the hair may be curled in the urease-containing paper and wetted with a urea-containing thioglycolate solution the pH of which has been adjusted to a little below 7. When urease-impregnated absorbent material strips are not used the urease or urease-containing substance is preferably added to the urea-containing aqueous solution or emulsion of the mercapto compound shortly before its application to the hair. The action of the waving compositions may be increased by increasing the temperature by use of a drier or vaporizer. The urease-containing substance may be soya bean powder or jack bean powder or the extracts of these powders from which insoluble constituents have been removed. In hair straightening processes the reagents are preferably applied to the hair in the form of a cream and straightening may be promoted by combing. The compositions used may also contain wetting agents, perfume oils, buffering substances, e.g. ammonium dihydrogen phosphate and citric acid, and thickening agents.
