Abstract

Keratinous fibres are treated with an aqueous solution of a mercaptan whilst in a desired configuration and with a titanate or zirconate ester of an aminoalcohol having the formula HORN(R1)(R11) where R is ethylene or alkyl substituted ethylene, R1 is a beta hydroxyalkyl or a beta-amino alkyl radical and R11 is hydrogen or an alkyl hydrocarbon radical containing from 1 to 3 carbon atoms or a beta-hydroxy- or beta-amino-alkyl radical. The hair may be treated with the mercaptan, e.g. thioglycerol or thioglycollic acid in aqueous solution and may then be rinsed thoroughly and treated with the ester, which may also be in aqueous solution, at normal or elevated temperature. Alternatively, the reagents may be applied in the same solution which may have a pH of 6 to 9 adjusted with ammonia, and which may also contain, as a stabilizing compound, sorbitol and/or gluconic acid. The hair may be subsequently treated with an oxidizing agent, e.g. potassium bromate, or an oxidizing catalyst, e.g. potassium permanganate, may be included in the treating solution. In examples, (2) hair wound upon a mandrel is treated with an aqueous solution of pH 9 containing thioglycerol and ammonia and after rinsing, with a solution containing triethanolamine titanate, sorbitol and H2O2; (3) hair is treated with a solution containing thioglycerol, triethanolamine titanate and sorbitol, the pH being adjusted to 9 with ammonia, and is wound upon a mandrel and subsequently treated with a potassium bromate solution; (4) hair is treated with a solution containing thioglycerol, triethanolamine titanate, KMnO4, sorbitol and gluconic acid, adjusted to a pH of 9 with ammonia and is wound upon a mandrel and is subsequently rinsed. Both hair-waving and straightening wavy hair are described.
