Abstract

Copper oxide and ammonia are obtained by adding an excess of sodium hydroxide to an ammonium persulphate solution containing copper salts and heating, preferably to boiling. Ammonia is evolved and cupric hydroxide which is formed is decomposed to cupric oxide which is removed by filtration or centrifuging. The solution may be a spent ammonium persulphate copper etching solution containing cuprammonium sulphate, copper sulphate, ammonium sulphate, sulphuric acid, ammonium persulphate. The heating may be at temperatures from 25-100 DEG C. Sodium hydroxide solution may be added during the heating to maintain an excess and a minimum pH of 12 or sufficient may be added originally. The supernatent solution remaining may be neutralized, e.g. with sulphuric acid, and discarded as non-toxic waste.
