Abstract

876,126. Treating wool. TENSORA G.m.b.H. Dec. 31, 1959 [Jan. 2, 1959], No. 44429/59. Class 15(2). Wool is subjected to the action of an aqueous medium containing a salt of diamino methane disulphinic acid and subsequently subjected to oxidation in order to improve its resistance to shrinkage. The salt of diamino methane disulphinic acid used preferably has the formula:- where M 1 and M 2 denote alkali metals, M 1 and M 2 preferably being the same and preferably potassium. The aqueous medium which may be in the form of a solution, emulsion or suspension and may also contain wetting agents, emulsifiers or buffer agents, preferably contains up to 20% by weight of the salt of diamino methane disulphinic acid. The aqueous medium preferably has a pH adjusted with triethanolamine, ammonia or sodium carbonate of 7-10 and may be used at temperatures higher than room temperature but below 100‹C. After treatment with the aqueous medium the wool may be rinsed with water and then treated with a solution of an oxidizing agent, e.g. hydrogen peroxide or a per salt such as ammonium persulphate, sodium perborate or sodium periodate, preferably containing an acid, to reconstitute the keratin chains decomposed by reduction with the salt of diamino methane disulphinic acid or exposed to aerial oxidation. The oxidizing agents and neutralizing media may also be applied in separate steps. After treatment with the salt of diamino methane disulphinic acid the wool fibres may be stretched to produce straightening or crimped and then oxidized to set in the desired configuration. Fibres, yarns, fabrics or articles consisting of wool alone or in admixture with other fibres may be treated. Specification 453,700 is referred to.
